Lee Harden “Take Time to Care” Awards Luncheon
Our community has many unsung “heroes” who quietly assist others on a day-to-day basis. Many of these individuals go largely unacknowledged for their good deeds. Each year, the Kiwanis Club of Detroit No. 1 recognizes a select few of these volunteers at a luncheon held in their honor.
In 1985, this name of this award was changed to the “Lee Harden Take Time to Care Award.” Lee joined our club in 1973 and passed away in 1985. He never served as an officer in our club – he simply wanted to be there to help in the spirit of what Kiwanis is all about. He truly lived the spirit of a service club and so whether it was selling peanuts in downtown Detroit, escorting young children to a sport’s event, helping the poor and indigent in a downtown soup kitchen, or chairing the club’s Sick and Sunshine Committee, Lee was there, always “taking the time to care”. Each year up to ten people are honored with this award in recognition of their self-less giving to their community.
