About the Foundation

The Kiwanis Club #1 Foundation of Detroit, Inc. provides funds to the Detroit Kiwanis Club No. 1, the Michigan District of Kiwanis, and Kiwanis International to serve the needs of youth and the community, with special emphasis on the city of Detroit.

P.O. Box 21621
Detroit, Michigan 48221-0621.

Inquiries regarding potential contributions may be directed to the Foundation President John P. Ray at the above address.

Your contribution will be a perpetual gift. Only the monies earned on the endowments principal are spent on the community service work by the Foundation. Your contribution is deductible for income tax purposes.

There are several options available for contributions to the Foundation. Please speak to your financial advisor to determine the option that best suits your personal circumstances. Your contributions to the Foundation may include the following:

  • Cash. Cash contributions are a thoughtful means of honoring someone on his or her birthday, to express your happiness for some event, or to express your sympathy when a good friend or relative dies. An acknowledgement or memorial card will be sent in your name to the person(s) you designate. The amount of your contribution will be held in confidence.

  • Wills. Bequests in wills should clearly indicate the Foundation by its formal name, Kiwanis Club No. 1 Foundation of Detroit, Inc. Bequests in wills may reduce estate taxes.

  • Securities. If the securities have appreciated in value at the time of the gift, there may be income tax and other advantages to you.

  • Real Estate. Real estate may be given to the Foundation or, if it is the donor's residence or farm, may be given subject to retained life interests. The value of the interest being given may be used as a charitable contribution for income tax purposes.

  • Insurance. The Foundation can be designated as both the irrevocable beneficiary and owner of an insurance policy. The Foundation would thus be assured of a definite sum in the future. The case surrender value and annual premium may be deducted as a charitable contribution.

  • Trusts. Irrevocable charitable remainder unitrusts or annuity trusts may be established to provide for lifetime payments to named beneficiaries. Upon the death of the surviving income beneficiary, assets would become the property of the Foundation.
